So easy for a caveman to operate

I have had two of these devices for almost 19 years and they both work very well for me. I'm not an electrician so to be honest I don't use them all the time but I do use them. What I like about this device is that it does not require separate batteries but uses power from the circuit. tested - IF power is on for that circuit. It's safe too! Hell, reading the results is as easy as plugging in when the circuit is assembled right side up. Great little reliable tool.

Pros
  • Very good value for money

  • Safety

Couldn't detect hot/neutral swap (critical!)

I happened to come across an outlet with the hot and neutral wires reversed BUT THIS DEVICE DID NOT DETECT THIS! It didn't report ground contact, which was true, but it didn't report a much bigger problem! I would never have noticed, but I installed a GFCI outlet and the outlet refused to reset. I've tried multiple outlets and none of them reset. When I swapped the cables, I found the problem. Now it is clear that very rarely the wires are reversed. But what's the point if a tester doesn't…

Handy tool!

For under $8, every DIY enthusiast should have one of these in their toolbox. Lightweight, durable and easy to read lights with matching labels. My scenario: Several sockets stopped working. I plugged it in and only the top right light came on. The sticker sheet told me I had an open idle. I traced the power to the junction box and actually found a loose wire nut that allowed the neutral wire to slip out! Helped me save time knowing exactly what I needed to fix the issue. I recently added a new

Works great for checking faulty wiring.

I replaced an old ungrounded two prong outlet in my apartment that went to my fridge, I kept the wires in the same orientation and checked with a multimeter to see if it was hot to ground turned on as hot out and neutral got swapped and I had to unplug the circuit again to redo the wiring. I've always wanted one of these devices, small, affordable and time-saving. If I had this device I wouldn't have to redo the wiring. As soon as I got the tester, I went back to that outlet and made sure…

That's what the electrician used.

An electrician came in to fix a T8 fluorescent tube ballast I had never done before and saw him do it so now I can replace it myself. But he tested the switch we often flipped when George Foreman's microwave and grill turned on, and he used a tester on outlets and funded one that was installed incorrectly in 1982. In fact, he had never seen an outlet like this when it came time to replace it. If you remember the old plug and go plugs, you know what I'm talking about. I laughed as I watched this

Pros
  • Quality construction

  • Could have chosen a newer model
