Works best in engines and engine parts

Smooth ride by the operator. Works as it should. One complaint is why not use a hex key in case the key gets lost. Don't take this part, but otherwise a good ring compressor

Pros
  • Tabs on the bottom prevent the compressor from slipping into the cylinder
Cons
  • Some bugs

Not a very good tool

Well the ring compressor isn't that good. Doesn't hold tight enough to install easily. The only way I was able to work was to have an assistant hold it while I inserted the plunger into the block. Without our help, the oil scraper ring will not enter the cylinder undamaged.

Pros
  • Ratchet clasp with fingertip release lever
Cons
  • Security

Spent $400 and the tool hammered my newly machined block!

Total bullshit! This tool does not hold firmly and is useless. Loosened further after fully aligning and tightening the piston and rings. Once you tap the plunger so that it enters the hole, it releases effortlessly. Very dissatisfied. Spent $400 at a machine shop trying to achieve this with this tool.

Pros
  • Made from quality materials
Cons
  • High price

OK, not great. for spare parts

I have successfully repaired engines with this tool. The problem is, if you don't push that ring compressor against the block very hard, the rings tend to pop out between the bottom of the ring compressor and the top of the block. This problem tends to be worse with thin streaks of oil. Although this tool works in principle, it is difficult to use and can potentially damage rings if you are not very careful. If you plan to use this ring compressor, do it slowly and take your time. If the piston

Not a bad tool but buy a better tool if you want a professional tool

The build quality leads me to believe this tool isn't for more than a few engine designs is designed. This is the level of a tool that lets you get the job done that you don't want to use often. You'll need to keep your thumb under the lever to make sure it's secure. You also need to make sure the aluminum walls are compressed evenly as they tend to move slightly when compressed. Overall I would buy this tool again if I had to do this project over and over again. It did the job, but lookโ€ฆ

Pros
  • For compressing rings on 2" to 5" pistons
Cons
  • Almost never

Works, subject to change.

I don't have a very good experience with this tool. I'm not a professional mechanic so I only had to work on one engine. This tool will work and is cheap so I won't discourage anyone from buying it but based on my experience I can make two caveats. 1) You can easily cut yourself on the edges of this thing, and 2) if you drop it on the ground it will most likely spin violently and the very thin steel bands compressing the sleeve will twist so much that You can never fix it. Yes, I'm a clumsyโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Piston Ring Compressor (2" - 5")
Cons
  • Disappearance

Works great - replacement

I first bought this to replace piston rings on a car. The tensioning mechanism is solid and the thumb loop releases the band with a single squeeze. (Make sure your hands are on the band when you do this, otherwise the tension on the band's spring will cause it to open too loose quickly.) At first I thought the supplied Allen wrench was needed to tighten the Bandes could be better as this makes it too difficult to tighten the band past a certain point After installing my four 3.150" pistons Iโ€ฆ
