Powermaster Performance 9604 Mastertorque Starter Review

The 'timing' feature is great and allows for perfect alignment in tight spaces near the headers/exhaust pipes. High performance and build quality.

I bought this starter because I bought a cheaper starter that ruined my flywheel. I also bought a new lightweight flywheel. This starter seems to be much better so far. I like how it spins faster than the factory starter (the cheap starter cranked slower than the factory one). I'll update this post in a few months or if it gets messed up.

So far, so good! It was a bit larger than I expected and it took a little time to set it up properly for my application (Ford 4.9L I6 with Clifford Performance connectors) and when I got it where it should have been the case jammed one of the mounting holes. To do this I had to pull it back out, loosen the InfiniClock adjuster ring again, rotate the mounting plate, install the bottom mounting screw, and reinstall. I bought this for my 1991 f150 302 with headers. Fits perfectly, sounds cool even on startup. Lots of power, turns the motor much faster than the original. The reason for the 3 stars is that after a few weeks (btw this is my third car, hardly used) I heard a terrible noise on the freeway and stopped. After some serious time under a truck on the side of the motorway I discovered that a gear had come loose from the starter motor and hit my gearbox! I unscrewed it and tied the zipper to the frame,

Very disappointed with the installation instructions from a major American company. The instructions look like they are from a Chinese product. The measurement chart is so confusing that it gives two shank diameters and no depth measurement. How do you measure the distance between the gears with the starter installed and no visible access? The flex clock wasn't lined up evenly, although I stressed the importance of parallel alignment, my starter didn't use blue Loctite, the screws were loose…
