Great NICK! Powered by 5Gbe, heats up

I have two of these, both work as advertised. I see a real 5Gbe connected to a Base-N Netgear switch with many 10Gbe neighbors. This device gets hot under load. From my experience it was good. I ran them under full load for 72 hours and they were pretty hot but still fine.

Wow what a disappointment - 67% slowdown

I recently installed fiber and wanted to test the 2.5Gbps port on the modem. My computer hardware only has 1Gbps network adapters. With my adapters, I achieved download speeds of 940-960 Mbps (which is within the expected 4-6% overhead reduction for Gigabit Ethernet). So I thought I'd grab this adapter and see what speed I can get. Instead of 940-960 Mbit/s (or probably more, since I got 1.5 Gbit/s in the parallel test) I got 300 Mbit/s! After repeated testing, it went back into the return box.

Pros
  • Perfect for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Not the best

It works on both Linux and Windows 10

So I chose one of these for the value for money compared to a Thunderbolt ethernet adapter. 5GE vs 10GE is not a big difference in terms of cost. The laptop doesn't work with TB anyway, and those who say they don't work either. Have tested this on both Linux and Windows and it all boots and connects to the network with no issues. The port on the actual adapter is Type -C, in which you are equipped with 2 cables as mentioned in the description. I haven't used any of these as I already have aโ€ฆ

  • Brilliantly made

  • Crumpled packaging

Cheapest aqc111 based adapter I could find

The most important thing about this adapter is the chipset. It uses the first released USB3.0 5GbE chip called aqc111u. This chip (and thus the adapter) is supported by the main Linux kernel (module name: aqc111) as I have verified. It also has many ethernet/offload features that reduce CPU load/interrupts: - rx/tx checksum - scatter collection - TSO - GSO - GRO - and a few other less important features. Haven't tested throughput or stability yet but will connect it to another still in the post

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Doubt

Okay, but 2.5G only on some systems.

Spoke to Sabrent, good support. Unfortunately, they couldn't help me with my specific setup. This 5G adapter only works in 2.5G on macOS Catalina, I will test other systems. Sabrent support agrees that the adapter is treated as its 2.5G adapter and even appears that way on macOS (see image). It's not about speed, it's about making your 5G adapter appear as a 2.5G adapter. Without installing drivers, the adapter would connect to 1G switch at 1G speed. Relax. But there were no options in networkโ€ฆ

Perfect fit for my home server

I upgraded my quad core home server with a standard AMD 1700 chip (8 cores/16 threads) and my quad core had an integrated graphics card. So I had to add a basic graphics card to my server and that forced me to use the 10GB NIC I was using with it. I only had room for PCIe 1x cards, of which only 2.5G cards are available. I got a Sabrent 5Gb/s NIC and solved most of my bandwidth problems. It was a hit from a 10 gig card, but I've still never been able to support speeds over 5G due to theโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Useless features

Very easy installation but not 5x the speed compared to 1Gb Ethernet

The product is excellent. I bought a QNAP NAS with 10Gb Ethernet support and a switch that does the same. I wanted the fastest networking device I could buy for my computer. I bought an internal card with my new computer but was sad to find that it only supports a PCIe x1 card when I bought a PCIe x8 card. Looking around, I couldn't find any PCIe x1 cards that support faster speeds than 1GB Ethernet. boo I found this card that connects via USB and promises 5GB connectivity. So I bought. Hereโ€ฆ
