Didn't last long for parts and components

I broke my rear cog after my Giant Hardtail had about 7 rides. Bought this replacement and after 4 rides it broke again. Gave this bike to a friend and he will upgrade the components. It's not a great rear mechanism at all.

Shimano quality and value for money

Shimano quality and value for money. I have used several of these rear derailleurs on refurbished classic cars with no complaints. Derailleurs have been out there lately, but this one appears to be a true Shimano.

Pros
  • Several competitors
Cons
  • Upgrade available

Good value for money.

Seems like a good price. Not the best option, and yes, plastic screws, but I don't think that's uncommon. I installed this on an old Fuji Royale 12 speed and it worked great with the friction shifters on the end of the handlebars. It took about 45 minutes to install a new shifter cable and derailleur and set the upper and lower limits.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Big and chunky

When changing from RD-TY300 to this TY500.

If you are upgrading from the RD-TY300 to this TY500 you will need to cut 2 3/4" from the cable housing to route more cable through the pulley through the cable guide to the cable latch (I only cut 2 1/4" and its tail is only about 5/8" long, almost too short for the job) make sure you don't cut the cord. hull only. but you already know that. just remember.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled

EASY TO INSTALL BUT I THINK TIME WILL TELL!

This one comes with bigger cogs or sprockets whatever you want to call them and they aren't made like the ones I've had before which is good they were made out of what - some hard rubber or something as long as I like them and in time I'll see if they work well as long as I take care of them, but the part that the cable goes through and connects to the barrel is plastic . So if you have to index it many times to get the right setting, chances are it will break like it did to the one guy who…

You pay for what you get. NG. I've eaten 2 already. Support cage and support wheels deform with normal chain tension. Very weak mechanism. Poorly built. Not worth it at any price. Just a headache. Do not buy! You'll go crazy trying to hire a bad shift! It will always drop gears under load or not shift at all, no matter how good you are at tuning and bikes. Don't waste money and time on it. Have many high and low level switches. This is just Shimano garbage. Yes, Shimano makes "garbage off the…

So. You love a challenge.

Bought a new 34t crawler freehub and quickly found that my current derailleur was not up to the task. I chose this one because of the price and the Shimano brand. If you're a weekend bike mechanic, look elsewhere if you don't like a challenge. Because this switch doesn't come with setup instructions. Therefore, I first shortened the cable sleeve so that it lays directly on the switch. Because I needed more cable slack to get through the shifter cable. But because of the pulley system used, I…
