I also have Firstsurge whole house protection and the quality of this coax protection is a joke in comparison. The coaxial cable is of very poor quality. Neither end is properly bolted to the tread. The thread is too big. The supplied ground wire is too short. The device doesn't work, or should I say my fios doesn't work when the device is installed and I've tried installing the cables both ways. Seeing another 140,000 amp protection doesn't inspire confidence.

Pros
  • Pretty impressive
Cons
  • Good but not great

Just useless for protection

I lost my cable modem and wireless router to a lightning strike on a pole. I took one and replaced the Spectrum bitch with this one, thinking I'd eliminated the threat. All electronics are already wired up with surge protectors and backup batteries (this is Florida, after all). Well... yesterday another lightning bolt struck the same pole. The same story. Blown cable modem and Wi-Fi router. Arris surfboard modems kind of allow the jump to the LAN and fry things downstream BTW. This block didโ€ฆ

Very questionable quality control - Supplied with broken coaxial cable

The quality of the short male to male coaxial cable supplied is very poor and mine was defective/inoperative. After installing as instructed, my cable modem was disabled and only partially reaching 1 out of 4 uplinks and none of the 16 downlinks I have with my ISP. With the coax removed all channels are connected and so far I don't see any problems. On the other hand, I didn't have any surges. Now that I think about it, neither end of the cable screws properly into the guard. The thread isโ€ฆ

Good Insurance: Surge Protector

This Siemens FSCATV coax cable surge protector was purchased as insurance against possible future thunder and lightning storms as we had destroyed a cable modem and cable TV converter by lightning about a year ago during from a nearby thunderstorm, and I didn't want to endure that kind of damage again. There has only been one thunderstorm since installing this Siemens surge protector and so far everything is fine and there is no noticeable drop in signal strength. Installing the unit was easyโ€ฆ

Long inlet and short outlet

There is so much debate about which end is which. . . The documentation is pretty clear now, the long end is a line coming off the road. The short end is the line that goes to your house. I installed this in a box outside my home where there was already a ground coupler. Swapped them for five minutes. My internet speed and TV reception have not changed. Does it really work to stop spikes? . . Who knows . . . But given the ease of installation and relatively low cost, I'll give it a 5 for now. I

Unusable for protection only

Cable modem and wireless router lost in pole due to lightning strike. I took one and replaced the Spectrum bitch with this one, thinking I'd eliminated the threat. All electronics are already wired up with surge protectors and backup batteries (this is Florida, after all). Just yesterday, another lightning bolt struck the same mast. The same story. Blown cable modem and Wi-Fi router. Arris surfboard modems kind of allow the jump to the LAN and fry things downstream, btw. This block did nothing.

Pros
  • St Listed Unit
Cons
  • Piggy Bank Price

The short male to male coaxial cable supplied was of very poor quality and mine was defective/non-functional. Installed As instructed, my cable modem was offline and only partially reaching 1 of 4 uplinks and none of the 16 downlinks I have from my ISP. With the coax removed all channels are connected and so far I haven't seen any problems. On the other hand, I didn't have any surges. Now that I think about it, neither end of the cable screws properly into the protector. Wrong or poorly madeโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Designed for CATV, DTV, TV, VCR and cable modem
