Description of ๐Ÿ”ฆ Southwire 40150N: Advanced Dual-Range AC Non Contact Voltage Tester Pen with LED Flashlight, Waterproof & Drop Test Rated"

PEN STYLE non contact electrical tester for easy detection of AC voltage. AUDIBLE AND VISUAL INDICATION of AC voltage on two ranges:12 to 1000V and 100 to 1000V. BI-COLOR LED verifies tester is on and range selected, red LED & beeper indicate voltage is detected. RUGGED IP67 WATERPROOF and dust tight housing with a 6' drop test rating. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL this electric tester features a built-in forward and rear facing flashlight for user convenience. The tester will not detect voltage if the voltage is DC; Wire is shielded or in a grounded metal box or conduit; the user is not grounded or is isolated from earth ground; the detector tip cannot be fully inserted into the electrical outlet; the electrical outlet is a Tamper Resistant design; the user is not holding the detector or the userโ€™s hand is insulated from the detector (i.e. with a glove); the voltage source or wire is partially buried.

This tester is terrible! Don't waste your money!

This non-contact voltage tester is terrible! This is not specific when trying to test the wires in the J-Box. It is everywhere. It's no better than the $10 ones on offer at Revain. I go back to my Fluke non-contact voltmeter. Hands are 100% better!

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Appearance

Stellar Safety Device

Like most things I've received from Southwire, this is the same excellent quality. When working with electricity, especially for those who might be a little nervous, this provides an extra layer of security by letting you know if electricity is present without finding the bad path. Simple but useful features and compact size. Great tool to add to your belt!

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Big and bulky

Excellent voltage tester

Bought to replace a similar device that broke after many years. I like that it uses removable batteries (I use rechargeable ones). The small LED light on the working end is useful, but the larger, brighter LED light on the other end really helps in dark places. Looks very durable (after a few drops). I would buy again if needed. Highly recommended.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Update available

This works when you need to identify a power supply circuit.

It does what it's supposed to do, except identify individual pinholes on duplex sockets. The tip of the tester's pin indicates that the entire outlet is live, rather than isolating grounded and ungrounded pin holes. But for those who use it to check the current in a conductor or circuit, it protects you from electrocution. Very relevant and recommended.

Pros
  • Decent performance

DC voltage detection is terrible

I bought this unit for its versatility and ability to measure DC voltage and I wanted to work on some faulty landscape lighting circuits. Spring. The first day I used it I realized that it is utter rubbish when it comes to detecting DC voltage through any kind of sheath. Only the constant voltage this detector joke picked up came from some kind of stripped wires. Come on! Don't advertise that flexibility and then offer a flimsy product. I don't like it so much that I can throw it in the trashโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Delivery was very quick
Cons
  • Expensive

It's good when they work

I bought two of these, both failed. The first week with this tester was great. Perfect for me in terms of display method, shape/size and durability. The first one I got became inconsistent after the first week. It got to the point where I had to take the circuit board out and bend the battery terminal back into place after it had somehow come loose and bent. Most sparks will agree that a tester that doesn't work reliably is not a tester at all. Because I liked this product so much, I boughtโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Dope ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Cons
  • The packaging is ugly

Safety first! for testers

I love this little gadget! I'm recently retired and as a pharmacist I've always wanted to delve into the "male" world lol. I assemble my own power tools for various projects and a very good friend of mine has one for checking "hot" electrical wires. One day while working alone on a home renovation, I encountered the problem of checking an outlet to see if it was hot or not. My friend talked me into testing the outlet with something like this and I was able to finish what I was doing. I told him
