Safety First: Marine Radios

I bought this for safety reasons for use in intercostal waters and probably won't be using the navigation features but so far I'm very impressed with the battery life and range. Easy of was rated well because many functions take some getting used to.

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • Operating Speed

The perfect protection

I wear this radio on my vest when I go kayak fishing, haven't had to use the radio's DSC functions yet. But now I feel a lot safer knowing I can press the DSC distress button to relay my position to the Coast Guard and other vessels should there ever be an emergency.

Pros
  • Top marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Makes me angry

What more can you add to a portable VHF!

Once again, Standard Horizon expands the possibilities of a wearable device. I can't speak to the issues people are bringing up about water resistance, but in terms of overall features, you can't beat this device. Easy Programming - I entered 40 MMSI numbers for our fleet via PC in minutes. The menu is better than the SX870, making it the easiest to use, full featured VHF, and it even has a scrambler. I can't think of any other feature I would like to have on FM.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

LCD screen failure (2 times!) Suspended water

After purging the remaining salty air from my HX 890, the seal around the LCD screen failed and water ingress was visible in the display. I ordered a replacement and tested the new radio under a sink. The second HX 890 also failed this time due to some water ingress. I consider portable VHF to be a key piece of onboard safety equipment. If you find yourself in a man-overboard situation, the dive capability of a portable VHF transmitter is critical to having a working radio to call for help as…
