Well-Working KVM Switches

Does what it says on the box and works well for the most part. I have 2 PCs: XP Pro and Win 7 Ultimate. One for remote work, the other for personal use. Both PCs sometimes mix up screen resolutions when transitioning from the splash screen or booting up when not selected, but that annoyance is offset by the solid metal construction and ease of setup and use when everything is working well. other switches in this price range seem to have more serious problems. It seems to be the least badโ€ฆ

Pros
  • hot-swappable capability that allows you to add or remove computers without worrying about rebooting other connected systems.
Cons
  • Can I add anything?

Simple - Just works!

I've read a lot of reviews about KVM switches and was a bit reluctant to buy this unit just because I'm not familiar with their products. My main concern was using a wireless USB Bluetooth keyboard with two different operating systems (XP and Windows 7). To my surprise, I received this item, pocketed it and wow! everything worked! No setup, no troubleshooting. just a nice simple switch. That's exactly what I wanted! My only complaint is that I'd like to switch between systems using a "hotkey"โ€ฆ

Pros
  • Reliable 3-year guarantee gives you peace of mind.
Cons
  • not reliable

Overall not bad - just a few issues

I am using this KVM with power attached, but you can use it with USB power only. I believe that plugging in power will improve screen resolution and USB hub performance, but I haven't tested this theory in detail. I really like the built-in USB hub for 1 device. I share a printer between two computers. The front button switches seamlessly from one PC to another and beeps when switching. An acoustic signal is optional, but also not annoying. The screen resolution on both computers looks fine inโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Unmatched reliability.
Cons
  • Small things

21st century KVM is the best external component

Startech's old KVM that still works was made for PS2 Developed keyboards and mice. Modern HP computers do not recognize my USB Logitech Wireless Trackman even with external DC power connected. I had to use a second USB switch to connect the Trackman to computers. I suppose I could hack KVM internally; Maybe it's a matter of better shielding, maybe a floating ground, or supplying 5VDC directly to the PS2 connector that powers the USB adapter. But I was too lazy for all that. While this KVMโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Control two computers connected via VGA and PS/2 with one keyboard, mouse and monitor
Cons
  • boring packaging

Great budget switch with wireless mouse support!

This is a reasonable price for a KVM switch. Of course there are much cheaper ones, but most of them don't have a USB hub, just a mouse/kb connection. I'm using a switch to connect two work laptops to a monitor/mouse/keyboard set. I only use it to toggle USB as one laptop has VGA and the other DVI to the screen so I selected that and turned on my work monitor (NEC EA241WM) which is pretty fast. The advantage of a USB hub is that it supports wireless mice and dedicated mouse ports are notโ€ฆ
