Lawn mower was becoming increasingly difficult to start. Even with a new battery it slowed down and wouldn't start. Sometimes the motor did not make a full revolution. I would have to release the button and press it again to get past the compression stroke. It took about 15 minutes to remove the top cover and replace the starter. This was on a ZTR mower and I couldn't see the starter cap screws. All mowers may not require removing the cover. Now it spins like a new mower and starts easily.

Starts twice as fast as the original. Now the engine starts in less than a full revolution, while before it took 2-4 revolutions! I suspect it's because they added a rubber/plastic washer to the friction surface, which makes the splines snap faster. .thus picking up speed faster. We'll see how long it lasts, but so far it's a lot better than the original. Considering the original died after 4 years and only 200 hours I don't see anything worse!

I strongly recommend anyone purchasing this starter for a Kohler Courage engine to have the valves adjusted before using this or any new one built in starter. Why? because if the exhaust valve is not in the right gap, the decompression cannot reduce the compression and allow the starter to crank the engine as intended. I just replaced the starter, solenoid and some wires which actually melted due to the overload. Check valve clearance. 0.004 inch at top dead center of compression stroke. God…
