First one I've been using in 10 years

Okay I won't go into details if it's the best but I've been using this device for 10 years to charge my marine batteries. . One battery is for the camper and the other for backup power to the pellet stove. Some say you should charge your marine batteries to 14.4 volts to keep them from sulphating. This device shuts off at 13.4 volts. I could get another type, PWM and 14.4 volts, but a lot of people say that the devices I've looked at don't turn off, they prime your batteries. I have experience…

Control the power of the sun. view

This is a very simple charge controller, it has one LED that will either tell you it's charging or one that will tell you that it's charged. and it comes back a fourth time when the battery is fully charged. The wire provided is smaller than the wire coming from the back of the solar panel. unfortunately I don't know the sizes. The cables speak for themselves, red + black - and very short. NO DIRECTIONS but it's easy enough and if you need these call an electrician maybe even check youtube…

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Hard to say

So these are solar charge controllers at the best price. If protecting your battery is more important to you than what a solar panel can offer you, go for it. I will be returning them in favor of some MPPT controllers. Originally bought six and connected in parallel with six 12v batteries which in turn were connected in series for a 72v electric tricycle with six 100w solar panels. They seemed to give me about half the charge I was getting from the chargers and really choked off the power…

Great for charging your boat's battery, see my plug tip

UV Radiation Health Tester for fully charging my boat's battery while climbing. Even sitting for hours in the middle of a lake with the engine off listening to music works great to keep the battery charged. Connector tip: I used several RC battery connectors (like this CTMF 7.2V Tamiya connector kit) between the panel and the controller. I also made an extension with these connectors that allows me to place the panel in different places on the boat (open bow). Contrary to one of the previous…

I thought it was cute. In about an hour or two

I don't trust this controller at all. First I connected the battery according to the instructions. Then I connected the controller. The charging light came on, I thought it was good. After about an hour or two, a green light came on, indicating it was charged. BUT, it was the same with the yellow charger. 3 hours later when I turned on the amber LED turn signal the battery was so low that the photocell attached to the lights didn't even work. It worked before I connected this because I checked…

Sunforce 7 amp solar controller

Bad quality: Really cheap quality. The attached instructions do not contain enough information. The site is just as uninformative. Cheap hookup wire (low current) and not equipped with screw terminal connections. Good: Product works as advertised. Surprisingly, the voltage "regulates" to the required value so as not to overcharge the battery with a simple switching operation. However, be sure to check the actual output voltage, you must BEFORE apply a load to the battery side of the controller.

  • Decent performance

Doesn't fully charge batteries

I bought one of these in 2007 and used it to charge two deep cycle batteries in my RV for two years before realizing which was better. Solar charging was new to me and it was cheap so I decided to give it a try. It turned out to work fine - it showed that it was charging. But my batteries never seemed to last long. I set out to find out why and learned a lot about solar charging in the process. With that training came an awareness of the pitfalls of charge controllers like this one. This is an…
