Combines the highest quality in this price range.

Bought because it was a brand I know and it was very cheap but when I got it I was really surprised at the quality, it has a brass set screw which I am sure of that it lasts longer than the aluminum empire screws used and the finish is really good, the level inserts into the pen and into the clear plastic so you don't have to worry about the lines rubbing off like with my empires - and Irwin squares. Coating on the blade so you don't have to worry about it becoming tarnished like Johnson's…

2 more minutes it will disappear 5

I bought it for professional tile work because it was aluminum and stainless steel. In general, the build quality and markings are exemplary. However, this is a hand tool and the manufacturer is neglecting your hands. The solid billet aluminum that makes up the body stays as sharp as a mill, as do the edges of the stainless steel bar. I'm not a prude, but that thing was sharp enough to almost cut you. Not quite, but almost. I took out the blade and with the help of two files and sandpaper I…

Yes this square is an upgrade

This square is slightly thinner and slightly longer than the regular square. Although it looks chunky, I find it to be as ergonomic as any square and the weight is almost identical. It needs to be hollowed out. The square's bearing surface isn't perfectly ground, but that's normal with all these inexpensive squares. The clasp is strong and straight, with precision ground edges. Screw and nut are made of brass. The nut is very large and has good knurling. It's a fairly large piece of brass…

Very nice smooth running square

This is a great square combination. It was square, judging by the square of the engineer I tested it with. It's lightweight and the stop slides very smoothly into the ruler's channel. The knob in the lock knob, or whatever it's called, you know, the orange thing, works fine, turns easily, smooth. No burrs or roughness in the ruler channel or in the screw device. The marker pin stuck at the bottom seems to be well attached. I don't think it's easy to detach from the instrument. Of course, the…

Poorly finished compared to what is described in the description

Aircraft aluminum - 5 stars - Stainless steel ruler - 5 stars - Huge plus for setting a bubble level 6 stars Sharp edges at 45 and 90 degree angles, BUT BUT burrs on both corners that need attention [wet sand to make it smooth]. You're getting $13, better than most in the price range, hoping you don't expect the nice (orange) finish to last long without chipping (minimum). So I didn't check the photos. Good for $13 [with my simple sanding/polishing on smooth surfaces] Better than a zinc die…

Pros
  • Precision machined surfaces

Scribe was not delivered. I posted a question here in early January asking if Swanson would send me a new writer a few weeks ago, but it looks like they just deleted my question - no wonder I never got an answer received and now have no time to get it back. Shame on me that I didn't just send the combo unit back rather than give Swanson a chance to fix what I thought was a small and simple problem, but double shame on Swanson for sending the product without all first Check details carefully…
