I used this on a new 3" 29" hardtail mountain bike converted to medium mount with the tire width increased from 2.25". One caveat: unless you're a professional bike mechanic I would just take the box and bike to a reputable shop and let them do the job. I heard how difficult it is to install them, so I didn't even try. This not only protects against punctures (the tube is housed in a protective sleeve that fits inside the tyre), but also in the unlikely event of a puncture. Flat tire lets you "go straight" to get home as the sleeve provides support. I think it adds a full pound (454g) to the weight of the bike.
