It was very easy to set up and almost all in one piece. I have this on my 20 gallon tank and it keeps it neat and tidy. It works better than I expected, my fish are happy

I wasn't expecting much given the price but was pleasantly surprised. The side panels are ideal for adding a water purification medium/polyfill in large aquariums and are ideal for a 10 gallon shrimp tank. It's not the prettiest, but if you're looking for a budget filter, you can't beat this one.

Have 2 of these, one is 20g long and the other is 29g. First, they are LOUD, way louder than other sponge filters I've used. Second, they are very high even on the lowest floor. I had to get a lot of my substrate out of the way in 20g. They say they're rated for anything up to 20g (as a stand alone unit. Based on the description here they won't fit in much larger tanks unless you have a different filter) but I'd find them really hard to use to be kept at 10 g or less.

This is a great filter but it needs some modifications. I would like to see another version with these settings. I think real enthusiasts will find it more attractive. It's still a good box filter. First, as you can see in my picture, I cut out the sides and pasted a very rough sponge on the sides. I hope for a soft but powerful function of this filter. I placed filter thread in two clear compartments to capture the incredible amount of detritus caused by the constant feeding of my pygmy seahorse baby brine crayfish. I'll post updated photos - that's from 8am. I also modified the filter head with a vent from an old sponge filter - the tube sizes for the throat are pretty standard so it's easy. I've added dual density filter threads to the outer chambers to capture most debris as a mechanical filter, partly to allow the sponges to form a layer of bacteria with less need for cleaning, and also because I can put it in in a hatchery and the slots are big enough for the juveniles to get in. For my aquarium I also had to cut about 1/2 inch of the outer tube so it wouldn't be too high above the waterline blocking the lid. So these are my required mods. The design is great and it works…
