Description of Whiteside Spoilboard Surfacing Router Bit
Whiteside Router Bits CNC Spoilboard Cutter: Spoilboard cutters are designed specifically to resurface, or plane, the top surface of the spoilboard. Shank: 1/4" for smaller CNC machines. Cut Diameter: 1". Cut Length: 1/4". Made in the USA.
I bought this for the surface finish and mouldboard on my CNC router. If you are using this on a large piece (my mining board is 3ft x 4ft) it might be worth buying a larger piece. The 1 inch tank tip makes the job much faster. Be careful with Big Box MDF when using this attachment. I've come across staples buried in the middle of MDF twice. The latest collision caused some damage to this nozzle.
I use this to finish a chipped CNC router plate and the cut edges were very sharp and I was surprised that all the cut edges were perpendicular to the vertical. axes and all in the same plane by 0.0005 inches! The result was a finish that performed as well as bits that cost a lot more. On passes with 40% overlap I could see NO tool marks on the very fine grain MDF surface.
I just bought a CNC router and needed a chipboard washer. After doing a little research and asking friends, they suggested this fragment from Whiteside. There are other more expensive attachments out there, but since I'm just starting out I decided to give this one a try. It suited my needs very well and left a very smooth and even surface. The MDF surface generates a lot of dust so make sure you have a decent dust collection system or enclosure and of course wear a mask when working with MDF…
Did a great job leveling my 24" x 49" chipboard vacuum gripper. I used a spindle speed of 12,000 RPM, a feed rate of 80 ipm, a depth of cut of .010" and a pitch of .4" on this 1" cutter to create a smooth surface without any ripples that might have occurred the spindle from the tram. It took just over 30 minutes to smooth out the loose board and generated a lot of very fine dust. The CNC router is fully enclosed so this wasn't a problem, but using it without a full enclosure will fly fine dust…
