Tool shop is best to work in

I gave high marks because the price of the tool matched the quality. It is not as strong or as well made as the much more expensive chain whips, but is suitable for the weekend mechanic. It took me two whips to disassemble the cassettes. I've broken a few with it with no problems

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Unreliable

This Thing Works - Sports

I've been racing for 10 years and I've never owned a chain whip! Despite the snap ring being absurdly tight, this tool held the cluster with ease while I loosened the snap ring with a Park FR 5.2 freehub tool. I expect to use the chain whip 2-3 times a year. If I were doing it regularly, I would consider something more permanent.

You get what you (not) pay for.

Sure it was cheap, but this chain whip might work if you're removing the cassette from a newer bike. I used it on an old bike that has probably never had the cassette removed before. So it was pretty tight. When I used it, the handle bent and the tool became unusable. A chain whip is essentially a specialized wrench and shouldn't be expected to bend under the force the average guy pulls on it.

Pros
  • Hands Free Operation
Cons
  • Small Parts

Inexpensive alternative to expensive ones

Prices for these tools range from low at this vendor to over $25. For a limited home mechanic this will suffice, for the routine needs of a pro spend more on a professional tool. The plating on this tool is minimal and will rust if not lubricated or protected. Mine has rust spots on the outside of the packaging. The tool is not made of hardened wrought metal but is stamped from sheet metal suitable for a limited DIY enthusiast. There was no problem with the rear sprocket holding tool.

Working quality is good

I was a bit concerned as some people were talking about grip slipping, I didn't even get close to this problem and have now removed 2 cartridges with it. I have several of these chain whips, my other is really high quality and costs more but they do the same thing. I've seen some people complain that the chain is too thick. In this case, use the last large sprocket on the cassette. I enjoy working with bikes and I can say that I would have no hesitation in recommending this tool.

Wow! This is the one!

I'm afraid to buy something much cheaper (at least for the time being) than alternatives. People said it fell apart. Not at all! It's incredibly durable for the price. I ordered two to take apart a 1960's Suntour Pro Comp ratchet and I didn't hesitate to remove both small cogs from these champions! Made from bike chains and a flat stamped thick and long sheet metal. Luckily the red plastic end knobs just slipped off and I used a bare hammer to hit the edges of both whips a couple of times.
