No! No! No! for aquarium pumps and filters

Do not buy. If you have already ordered, please cancel the order. This charcoal insert is why Zoo Med's superb filter is on sale. Smooth surfaces keep organics out and my tank was left with high levels of ammonia for several weeks. That does not work. Go to the pet store, buy a nylon bag and over-the-counter activated charcoal chips. The chips have a rough, porous surface that increases the rate of absorption. Thanks to this, the Zoo Med filter works very well; clear water and ammonia to zero.

There is a better way!

Filter 501 works! I have a 50 gallon tank of about 1/2 inch with a 6 inch red tube spool. All was well at first, but as The Flash (that's his name) neared the 6-inch mark, the carbon bags couldn't keep up. . I cleaned the aquarium 2-3 times a week and struggled to keep the water clean even at this rate. This slime kept collecting in the filter, and I changed the charcoal bag weekly. Anyway, he did a great job keeping my {18x24x14} turtle tank clean and odor free. One thing I noticed when I got the new charcoal bag is that the box says to put the charcoal bag on top of the ceramic filler. My 511 instructions state that the ceramic filler must…

some basic info on filter media

I use Zoo Med and Fluval filter bags in the 501. Fluval is cheaper due to the use of bulky (scrap) chips found in other processing like high tech municipal Substances for treatment plants are left over from the filter bags. The processed granules in the Zoo Med sachet are actually a high-end product and the sachet helps facilitate water flow. Mesh bags like Fluval and those you can buy and fill yourself often have spots that clog quickly. I don't know why Zoo Med packs don't work for some…
