Update: Smaller hooks are not suitable for small projects like amigurumi. The yarn seems to snag on almost every stitch which isn't great when trying to make a doll or small animal, it doesn't give a smooth finish due to the pieces of yarn snagging and pulling. The larger sizes are smooth, but some of the smaller hooks are coarse and will snag the yarn a bit. I've never used wooden hooks so it takes a little getting used to. I ordered these as a pattern for a crochet class I'm planning to teach, with project material. I wanted to provide my students with a working hook starter kit without a huge cost to the class. I'm glad I read the reviews, not surprised by possible shortcomings. They were all very rough and had to be sanded before they could be used.
