Great for small clearance thanks to 86 teeth

I'm updating my tool collection and getting rid of old tools that have problems but still work. Most of this tool list consists of my ratchet sets. Some of them have 36 teeth or fewer, which equates to very little movement in a confined space. The higher the number of teeth, the more movement you get in a limited arc. When I saw this set, I ordered it. Here's what I found: 1. As expected, these are actually 86 tooth ratchets and therefore offer a lot more movement in a short arc space! The…

A quality set of fine-tooth ratchets from a name you can trust.

Gearwrench never disappoints because you get the best bang for your buck when it comes to tools. Some might argue that artisans or huskies even bring cargo to the port, but for me, if you can't buy an American, buy a Taiwanese. Of course, they may cost a little more than the above, but remember that Taiwanese production is always a notch above its Chinese counterparts in terms of production, quality, and control. This polished 84-tooth drop set provides excellent ratcheting in areas where you…

Pros
  • Easy to set up
Cons
  • Low repairability

This review is for the GEARWRENCH 3 piece set 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" 84 tooth drive fully polished teardrop ratchet. These tools are beautiful and shine I find them to be very well made. The plastic they come in is very thick which makes it great that they don't bang. These are not quick release ratchets so there is no button to push the socket out which is fine with me. They have a flush selector lever on them it says "on" and "off" on the back depending on which side the selector switch is on.At…

Beautifully shaped ratchets.

I have to say I'm a big fan of the latest generation Gearwrench. The previous generation seemed to have a few issues here and there, but in my short-term experience they seem to have been ironed out. Of course I won't really have a REAL rating for them until after 5 or 10 years in this equation. Because let's face it, decent tools should last decades, if not forever, with good care. Or damn near. Having only done one job with them (on a Kia, no less), I can't say where they will be in a decade.

Pros
  • Closed head for exceptional protection from dirt
Cons
  • Older model

High quality, smooth action mechanisms that are easy to clean

This is a standard gear wrench in new packaging. They work the same as the old model but instead of being laser engraved with "84 teeth” they are now engraved on the back of each tool along with the new style logo. The ratchet is the same reliable 84-tooth gearing they've used for years and I've never had a break, even after heavy use. The flat head is always welcome, and the forward/reverse switch is easily toggled with your thumb while holding the tool. What I really like about the…

Pros
  • Teardrop base and integrated on/off switch for even better access in hard to reach places
Cons
  • Ugly packaging

Excellent quality, design and workmanship

I have been a professional mechanic for many years and have tried many ratchet wrenches in the shop during that time. Some of them have accompanied me for decades due to their design and workmanship, others have not survived. I learned years ago never to buy "cheap" keys that you really have to "lean on" in tight spaces. If they are suddenly triggered by slipping or breaking the pawl, your joints will suffer pain. Therefore, I've always insisted on brand name tools for potentially dangerous…
