Used them to replace the regular mylar blankets in our emergency kits.

I have ordered several of these kits for emergency kits and tornado shelters. We keep regular Mylar blankets in our first aid kits, but we wanted something stronger if we needed it for anything longer than a quick emergency. Typical Mylar blankets are less durable and tear easily. This one is also larger than what came in our first aid kits (56" x 84"). I prefer this blanket to the versatile Mylar we had. It's not as "crumpled" and I like the bright orange color as well as the larger size. Theโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Camping
Cons
  • Secret

I like extra light emergency blankets that keep the body warm in cold weather or when injured, or on a sunny day reduce body heat absorption by reflecting the sun but not retaining body heat. . For that I need blankets that only reflect on one side, and they're surprisingly hard to find. I carefully and partially unrolled one of these to check what's on each side and they don't appear to be any thicker or heavier than a classic foil blanket. The orange side doesn't make them noticeably heavier.

  • Camping & Hiking

They appear to be made much stronger than regular Mylar blankets

A few years ago while living in DC we had a sudden midday snow storm that hit the entire metro area at over 2 inches per hour. Usually a 40 minute drive turned into a 7 hour ordeal and I was lucky that some of us had tens of hour drives or ended up in hotels. I saw many, many disabled and abandoned cars on the way back. This got me thinking - what happens if my truck breaks down somewhere and the conditions are such that I have nowhere to hide? Luckily I never really needed to use this itemโ€ฆ

If you don't have one in your car, consider buying

Summary: A year ago my friend drove through a river crossing and her car stopped. It was about 40 outside and she was soaked to the skin in her robe. I let her put one in her purse and she wrapped herself in it for an hour, waiting for a tow truck. If she didn't have it, she would certainly get hypothermia and probably go to the emergency room. Wool and fleece blankets are great and cheaper, but they're big and take up space in your car. The thing is small and flat. Stash it under the driver'sโ€ฆ

Cons
  • Not bad, but...

Stronger and unlikely to break

This is better quality than other rescue blankets I've seen. It's a bit thicker, which I can attest is extremely important if you plan to rely on it in windy weather. The only time I've ever used an emergency blanket was while hiking the Ray Lakes Loop in the Sierras. My hiking partner and I shared some of our gear. He took the tent and I took the stove and the food. We parted, and he spent the night hungry, and I spent mine homeless. I had one of those standard emergency blankets that you putโ€ฆ
