Ideal reliable router for my home network

I recently upgraded my internet service to Fios gigabit speeds and found that my existing router/switch has gigabit ethernet ports but can't really handle gigabit internet traffic. My situation is a little unique. I have a house with a wired ethernet network and the internet service goes down to the basement where I have a structured media center to manage all the wired connections. My router connects directly to the Verizon ONT in the basement. I have a WiFi hotspot downstairs to provide WiFiโ€ฆ

Great router, great flexibility, requires some knowledge

I've been using edge routers for years and the edge lite is still a good buy for home and some business situations. They work great as OpenVPN hotspots in remote network access locations. The 5-port PoE versions of this router range are fine, but in situations where you don't need PoE, this is probably what you need. It runs much cooler than PoE and I've had several internal PoE flash drives that have failed. The Lite had no crashes. So if you want to tinker and learn about networking at homeโ€ฆ

Defective RAM and built-in flash drive.

Stuck died at the age of 2.5 years. It worked great at the time, but I didn't know much about some of the most common issues with this router until it finally hit me. My ERLITE-3 no longer boots after checking the working memory. It crashed after trying to factory reset it (that was after it crashed once while I was at work). I thought maybe the built in flash drive was the problem after researching the Ubiquiti forums. Ordered a serial cable and a new compatible USB stick, confident I couldโ€ฆ

Pros
  • New in my collection
Cons
  • Set of coefficients

This is a very good router for the professional user. I recommend it to non-technical people for the following reasons: 1) The GUI (Graphical User Interface) has limited functionality. If you're using IPv6 like me, you'll need to become familiar with the command line interface (CLI). Using the open source Vyatta Guide usually helps when setting up EdgeOS. 2) You may need technical skills to solve problems that Ubiquiti has not yet solved. It can be used as a load balancer for two differentโ€ฆ

Strong and powerful if you know what you're doing

First off: This is, as everyone said, an extremely powerful/fast router. Don't let the small size (and price) fool you. I work in the IT department of a large corporate office, bought it for my home network and am now considering replacing our thousand dollar Cisco 4U routers with EdgeRouters. Set up was easy except for two small issues. The first problem was that I couldn't update the firmware via GUI or command line (both GUI and SSH) due to lack of memory, but I was able to use a consoleโ€ฆ

Fast (though see below), runs pretty hot so make sure it can breathe

I like it. It's fast IF YOU ENABLE EQUIPMENT UNLOADING (check it out in the reviews and online documentation too). But for heaven's sake, dude, what a fool would think 1) not to activate this by default (from here many see a speed limit of approx. 200 Mbit/s and complain about the router) 2) don't add tabs and checkboxes activate it. You must do this using the command line interface. In 2020 - WTF? You can do all kinds of QoS etc from the GUI, but isn't that an important setting change?! POOHโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Great range
Cons
  • Makes me nervous
