D-Link DI-704P (silver case)

DI-704P does what it promises. Port forwarding works with AIM and MSN file transfers. You can play online games right out of the box without any setup and you can also host games as a server against games like Unreal Tournament 2003, Nascar 2002 and Medal of Honor without exposing yourself to the DMZ. corresponding port ranges. I run the Kerio firewall on all client machines and only allow game executables to access these forwarded port ranges. It gives me full hidden reports from grc, sygate…

Pros
  • Protects your network
Cons
  • I have no particular complaints about it, everything is fine

Mediocre at best: Print server

I originally bought this unit for its print server capabilities. The first one I bought must have been returned by someone as the password wasn't what it should have been by default. Also, the reset button on the device didn't reset the factory settings as described in the documentation. I called tech support and they waited for me for an hour and a half! Finally, the tech showed me how to reset the passcode (by holding the reset button, unplugging the device, waiting 20 seconds, plugging it…

Pros
  • Works with any Ethernet cable/DSL service
Cons
  • I'll write later

Can't turn off firewall, unstable print server

I was thrilled when I first installed my DI-704P last summer. Sharing an internet connection is very easy and the print server was a great feature. However, I soon found that Windows (98, 2000 and XP) often crashes when I try to print to one of my Canon printers (BJC-2100 and S750) via the print server. I had to reconfigure Windows to print directly to the printer, which causes the program doing the printing to hang before the print is complete. Even with this setting, the print job often fails

Pros
  • Has built-in firewall
Cons
  • Speed

A good router and print server for a cable modem.

I bought a refurbished model for about [$$$] and everything was perfect. The old administrator password has already been removed, so there were no problems accessing the configuration. D-Link DI-704P is very easy to connect. I particularly like the idea of moving all the wiring to the back and the LEDs to the front. As for the documentation; All this is on a CD in pdf format. I think that reduces costs. It took about half an hour to install and launch, mostly due to a small, undocumented bug…

Pros
  • Shares its broadband connection
Cons
  • Big and bulky
