Review on MAXXIS Minion Tubeless Bicycle MaxxTerra by Timothy Louis

One of the best tires I've ridden

I'm always critical of the price tag on mountain bike tires. It's ridiculous how much they charge for them considering their lifespan and durability compared to my truck tires. I just wanted to clarify what my point of view is. Of all tire brands I've tried now and there are many. I've had the longest life with this Maxxis Minion DHF. I run these tubeless tires at about 27-30 psi in the rear with Orange Seal tire sealant. I have a full suspension bike with 6 inches of travel. I ride almost exclusively a solo track in the Colorado Rockies at least once a week. The terrain ranges from damp forest floor to dusty, rocky high desert. I don't drive in winter or snow. This purchase was a replacement for the same tire. I drove this tire from April 2019 to July 2020. In my opinion it's a good life compared to other tires I've ridden, far surpassing tire life like Specialized Butcher Grid, Purgatory Grid, Ground Control, Kenda Nevegal and a few others. With these tires I was lucky enough to ride for 3 months before the loss of grip became unbearable and dangerous. At Nevegal I struggled to get more. more than 2 months riding on them. With the Maxxis Minion DHF, grip was excellent in both braking and climbing. I haven't noticed any real fading until the past few weeks. Then they just "fell off" quickly. But that didn't bother me, because I've driven a lot of kilometers with this tire. Impressively they held up so well for so long and then the fall was sharp and fast. I would recommend this tire to anyone who drives a lot and often. I still think $70 for a bike tire is ridiculous, but I think that in the long run, at least, they won't cost me more than my truck tires, like Kenda and Specialized tires.

Pros
  • Great construction
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
