Cerium Oxide Polishing for Lens Restoration

Glass polishing requires some practice and practice. To polish some loupes, I first practiced on a badly damaged lens to learn how. First, I soaked the polishing pad in water for an hour. For polishing, I used 3 to 4 parts water to 1 part powder and applied a slurry to the glass about 1/4 inch thick. I used the drill, set it to minimum speed and locked it in place and gently pressed the glass against the burnisher for 3 minutes, no more than 5 minutes, making sure there was always some slurry between the burnisher and the glass, while I always use the moving glass to polish the entire surface. I then rinsed it with water to see the progress. I used the second hand of a wristwatch as the time. After a few test runs, I buffed some of the lenses I wanted to keep and buffed away many of the surface scratches and white water deposits. These lenses now work great on my camera. This cerium oxide powder works, it just takes patience and practice to learn the best approach. I am very happy with the results.
