Review on 16-Core, 32-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor - AMD Ryzen 9 5950X by Wei Fan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This is the best processor for gaming or 3D design I have ever had.

GSkill (CL16). Compared to the Ryzen 3900X it replaces, my work with Substance Painter is almost twice as fast when it comes to texture compositing. Blender 2.9x performance is also much better, even though the graphics card hasn't changed on my system, especially with millions of vertices when sculpting models. The gaming performance is also excellent with around +15% FPS in Star Citizen (ceteris paribus). ) - for the first time I hit 100+ FPS in SC, which is unheard of at 3900x (most were in the high 80s). Caveat: This is a 3.13 beta, so the game has also seen improvements and tweaks, but the 5950x goes through everything I throw at it. My particular device runs at 4.6GHz on all cores during normal operation (as reported by Windows) and HWINFO reports that 4 cores are often clocked at over 5GHz with a peak frequency of 5.25GHz. No overclocking, this is automatically ready to use with default board and processor settings. Warning: This unit requires excellent cooling and I am using a Corsair H115i capellix AIO with a newer (larger) Asetek pump. This cooler runs at 28°C compared to my old H115i which used to run at 35°C so cooling has a big impact on max clock speed. I use custom Noctua AF14 IPC3000 fans for the high pressure cooler - not Corsair fans - but that hasn't changed from the previous H115i. All in all, highly recommended, but for gaming I'd go with the 5900X or 5800X as they can probably hit 5GHz too. I use the extra cores for 3D design work, not gaming, although the 5950x has a faster onboard clock than other Ryzen 5000 series models.
