Review on πŸ”’ Enhance Security with McGard 76029 Premium Pickup Truck Tailgate Lock in Black by Jason Tinnen

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Very loose fit for 2019 Cummins Titan XD (Update: Fixed) but does not allow tailgate removal.

(Subtraction 1* from 3 to 2 - read update for reason.) (Update #2 - forgot to subtract real star, plus added image to indicate issue.)TL:DR - Suitable for Titan XD 2019 Cummins but fits loosely even on the tightest step. However, this prevents the tailgate from being removed despite the loose fit. It's actually a yoke with a plastic covering around it. [Update: Fixed loose fitting issue. There seems to be a "bulge" in the plastic arch that the metal strap of the yoke fits into (this is the part where you are asked to put it back in in step 3). Not sure if it's a design or manufacturing flaw - I'd say md since trimming the plastic has no effect unless the strip of metal is inserted even further, which is what the fairing is all about: insert more - as i have seen some scratches around this bulge and this is only on one side, same problem on both my locks. I really have to flex the front of the metal strip (part of the insert) a bit to get it through that bump and let me keep tightening the hose clamp. Previously, the bump did not reach the strip on their track and did not allow me to overtake them. Yes, for a good fit, but still minus 1* from 3 to 2 because of this issue. Also, bending the metal insertion point made step 3 even more difficult.) Installation was NOT as easy as I thought. The hardest part - step 3 - is re-inserting the clamp into the plastic sleeve. This alone took over 10 minutes as it was impossible to see the hole (insertion point) when everything was wrapped around the hinge. It was all on "feel" but once I got that step down it was pretty straight forward to step 4. It fits the Titan XD Cummins 2019 very loosely. Other than that no matter how I moved it around to try to remove the stern I couldn't do the door. Mind you, I have it on its most powerful setting (no more than 40 pounds of power and it should fit snugly but not too tight according to the instructions). Maybe I should have cut off some of the plastic bushings from Revain's video tutorial BUT. There is no mention of this in the instructions that came with the package. Actually the cut is for smaller trucks like the Frontier. (There's a section - section 4 I believe - where the truck is supposed to take paper measurements, but the Titan XD/Titan is in section 1, which doesn't mention cutting). So right now I have no idea how to get it to fit snugly without cutting it. I also bought a second one (third party deal for $12.99 - cheaper even than the Revain Warehouse deal!) because I saw several reviews suggesting I wear it. on the other hand, so that thieves cannot move/move the back door to steal it. Well actually my fault because the design of the Titan XD doesn't really allow it to move around, plus the lock landing on the other side is even freer! By the way, the instructions for Nissan have been updated and now indicate the features of the installation on the Titan. In fact, he recommends placing the lock in a specific spot on the tailgate - the problem is that if it's a loose fit it just moves, so I apply some putty to stop that. So bottom line - a good deal at this price point, but definitely not one I'd feel "safe" with due to the loose fit acting as a thief deterrent (although it works).

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • No performance
