Review on Thomas Traceable Flip Stick Thermometer Degree by Jon Bishop

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent reference thermometer

I bought this thermometer primarily as a reference thermometer to calibrate marine aquarium temperature controllers. I had to calibrate these controls as they weren't as accurate as I had hoped, but first I needed to know the exact water temperature. I love that this is a scientific test thermometer, factory calibrated to ISO/IEC17025, ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 and 9001 and comes with a calibration certification sheet from an accredited laboratory. The range is -58 to +572 degrees Fahrenheit with a resolution of 0.1 degrees from -20 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and 1 degree beyond. It samples every second. The calibration is valid for two years and the recalibration period is stated on the certificate. You just ship it to the factory in Texas to be charged. The device is lightweight, made of plastic, and contains a AAA battery. The retractable probe is made of stainless steel and activates the device when extended. It has a large, easy-to-read LCD display with large numbers and three buttons: Hold, F/C. and Max/Min, which seem a bit cheap but work well. My first downside is that it doesn't remember the F/C settings and defaults to Celsius when turned on so I have to toggle it every time. This is a minor inconvenience, but a design issue nonetheless. You could make a mechanical switch instead of a button and be done with that. So my first impressions are great and I'm glad I have a reference thermometer that I can trust. This company manufactures many precision instruments. My second downside is that there is a guarantee, but it's not documented in the instructions or even on the Traceable website. The only link is their terms and conditions, which ask you to refer to the product documentation. You can't even register a product. One star deducted for that.

Pros
  • Calibrated to ISO 17025 traceability standards for measurement certainty
Cons
  • Not sure
