Great device! on networking products

So I had an old FireStick Gen2 and the built in Wi-Fi was poor at best. Caused multiple crashes with the IPTV server I'm using. So I looked for hardware solutions. First, using an OTG cable and an Ethernet adapter, I was able to connect my first generation FireStick 2. However, my second was a little further away and didn't have wired ethernet, and I didn't want to pinch any cables. I started looking for MoCA adapters for some devices to convert ethernet to coax to use as a transmit/receive backbone. They looked very promising but I found the prices to be a bit higher than I was willing to pay. Then I came across these DirecTV DECA devices, which are very similar in operation to the expensive MoCA adapters I was looking at. It turns out these devices use MoCA and work just like their more expensive counterparts, just on a different band (frequency). They work in the 500-850 MHz range (cable, OTA frequencies), more expensive MoCA devices work in the 850-1500 MHz range (e.g. satellites like DirecTV or DISH). So more expensive devices may interfere with your satellite provider (if you have one), less expensive DirecTV models may interfere with your cable/OTA provider (if you have one). In fact, I have both satellite television and cable internet. So both devices can influence my home network via my coaxial cable. I chose them because they cost $16 instead of $160. However, since I have cable internet, I made sure to isolate the cable coming from my wired connection and power my cable modem separately from the home splitter I used to power my house to ensure there was no interference. The setup was: cable modem οƒ  adapter 1 οƒ  coax network --> adapter 2 --> device that requires ethernet. There was some lag in the ping (I attribute this to the switch from ethernet to wired and back), but once plugged in everything works fine. Long story short, for $16 these baddies did a really good job of what I was trying to achieve (which has nothing to do with DirecTV).

Pros
  • Feels good
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
