We are enjoying using this filament for the first time. While it sands much much better than regular PLA, it isn't exactly like wood. If your settings aren't quite right, it's stringy compared to regular PLA, but does rub/sand off easily [read our update]. It also depends on the contours whether or not it takes stain well. If the top is solid, the stain basically doesn't penetrate (you can see that in the flat surface of the plinth block). But if there are contours, it does look cool! I'll post some pictures of the same rosette printed 4 times before we adjusted our settings properly. one is straight off the printer before we had our print settings tuned (see the strings), the next one is brushed off with a metal brush, the third has been worked over with sandpaper and a small file and is ready for staining, the fourth is stained and ready! If you are willing for a fair bit of post-processing, or printer setting tweaking, it's great! UPDATE: A Thingiverse user helped us with settings, and we can get prints now that need little to no clean-up. Up the retraction distance quite a lot, also the retraction speed, but especially the non print movement speed. An interesting note for people who enjoy carving, you can carve this stuff! Here's a video with some other shots of the rosettes/plinth blocks. [.] Guess it doesn't work to insert the link. Search YouTube for "3D printed library room" and it'll come up.I put these settings on Thingiverse with the Victorian Rosette Block, but will also put them here for reference:(Incidentally, scaling the rosette to be 40.00mm square and making the Z Offset -6.00mm turns it into a great quick-printing test piece for this filament.)Every printer seems to have its own "personality”, but here’s what works well on ours!FlashForge Creator Prowith the MicroSwiss All-Metal Hot EndSimplify 3D settings, Hatchbox Wood Filament PLA:Extrusion Multiplier: 1.1Extrusion Width: Manual 0.40mmRetraction Distance 7.00mmExtra Restart Distance 0.00mmRetraction Vertical Lift: 0.00mmRetraction Speed: 95.0mmCoasting Distance 0.20mmLeft Extruder Temp: 200Default Printing Speed: 70.0mm/sOutline Underspeed: 100%Solid Infill Underspeed: 100%Support Structure Underspeed: 100%X/Y Axis Movement Speed: 130.0mm/sZ Axis Movement Speed 20.0mm/sOnly retract when crossing open spaces = YESForce retraction between layers = YESMinimum travel for retraction = (not checked)Perform retraction during wipe movement = (not checked)Only wipe extruder for outer-most perimeters = YESAvoid crossing outline for travel movements = (not checked)
