Review on HATCHBOX 3D Printer Filament - 1Kg Spool, 1.75Mm Wood Filament With +/- 0.03Mm Dimensional Accuracy by Kyle Whitehead

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Didn't have great luck, unfortunately. Uncommon for Hatchbox.

I ordered the Hatchbox Wood filament hoping that the quality would match that of the other Hatchbox PLA filaments I've used. Unfortunately I was severely disapointed and will definitely be trying other brands of wood filaments before trying this Hatchbox wood filament again. I'm currently using the Ender 3 with several modifications (EZABL sensor, upgraded extruder, fan, dampers). I haven't had an issue with any other filament thus far, and I've had great results with other Hatchbox PLA filaments. Unfortunately, after many prints, I've given up on the roll of filament I received. If I purchase or use this filament again in the future, I will be sure to update my review.THE GOOD:- The filament when printed correctly looks fantastic. It has a somewhat rough texture and feels similar to wood (although most people could probably tell it's not actually made of wood). The texture of the filament makes watching each layer being printed very satisfying.- It has a slight smell of sawdust when printing. Sanding a finished product also feels like sanding something that's actually made out of wood as well. Hatchbox did a great job at making this filament as close to printing with wood as possible for desktop 3D printing. I really applaud them for that.- Printing with this filament doesn't really require much tweaking of your usual PLA settings (unless of course you're printing at 0.05 - .01 layer height. I don't think this filament would handle that very well)THE BAD:Honestly, my only issue with the roll of filament I purchased is that I don't believe the dimensional accuracy on my entire roll is consistent.- I printed many small - medium sized models with the first 1/4 - 1/3 of the roll and had 0 issues with extrusion, in fact, everything looked just as good as my other PLA prints turn out. I tested with some sanding that turned out amazing, and I still plan on trying to stain some of the prints that were successful just to see how it looks finished up like real wood.- About 1/3 - 1/2 of the roll in, without any issues, I decide to do a large print of 12 hours. Not a single flaw. The print turned out great and without any under-extrusion from what I could tell, whatsoever. The next day I printed again (an identical print to the one I had just done previously to that), and it made it 10 1/2 hours into the print before clogging. Frustrated, I cleaned my nozzle out, made sure there was no excess buildup of plastic anywhere near the nozzle, and printed again. 3 minutes into the re-print and the filament clogged in the extruder again.I've tried several times to print with this filament again and it's a "hit or miss" every time. When I've clogged up, I've measured some areas with my digital calipers and I found some areas much bigger than 1.75mm, some spots nearly reaching 2.0mm, but going through the entire roll by hand with my calipers to find ALL of these areas is a much bigger project than I can handle right now. That, and if I do find more of these areas it wouldn't help me print with the filament anyway.Overall, I think the roll of filament I received was an uncommon occurrence for Hatchbox and I don't hold 1 roll of filament against them. I've purchased 12+ other rolls of PLA RECENTLY and have had nothing but good luck and great experiences with those. This was the only roll that was inconsistent. I would recommend this filament only to people who are confident in their 3D printer and it's current prints with PLA. Otherwise, it's going to be hard to tell whether your issue is actually the filament or your machine.

Pros
  • ‎3D WOOD-1KG1.75
Cons
  • Wood filament can produce a lot of dust and debris during printing, which may require frequent cleaning of the printer
