For years, Yahtzee has been a fun, portable, fast-paced dice game that the whole family can play. Although Qwixx is a completely different game, I think it's a bit better than Yahtzee. Your score sheet in this game consists of 4 colored rows of 12 squares each. Red and Yellow are in ascending order (from 2 to 12), Blue and Green are in descending order. The aim of the game is to tick off as many numbers as possible before the end of the game. The more numbers you tick in a row, the more points you get. The catch is that numbers can only be crossed out from left to right. For example, if 5 is the first number you cross out in the red row, you can no longer cross out 2, 3, or 4. And if you skip 6, 7, and 8 and cross out 9, the numbers you skip can no longer be crossed out. This is how the turn works: The active player rolls 6 dice (2 white, 1 each red, blue, green and yellow). The active player announces the sum of the two white dice, and all players may mark that number in any row if they wish. The active player also gains access to the second number: he can choose 1 white die and one of the colored dice and tick that number in the row of the colored die of his choice. The penalty can hit the active player: if the active player doesn't simply check a number on their turn, they get a -5 penalty at the end of the game. There are other rules for blocking rows and how the game ends, but it's actually a very simple game and the rules accompanied by some pictures and examples are easy to understand. Why do I like it better than Yahtzee? First, he plays much faster. The dice are only rolled once per turn, so that no one has to wait long for a dice roll, even with a maximum of 5 players. In addition, each player has the opportunity to benefit from each roll, which allows players to participate in the game throughout the game. I don't find it as disappointing as the Yahtzee either. I never thought it would be fun to throw 2 sixes on the first throw and not get any sixes on the next 2 throws. For some reason, in Qwixx, even though it's a dice game, there doesn't seem to be many instances where the dice ruin your chances of winning. Players have a little more control over how to score and finish the game on their own terms. No, Qwixx is not a high-end game where you will develop multiple strategies over time. But it's a fun, fast-paced dice game with some interesting decision moments that you'll recognize after a few plays. Easy to carry and play, it can become an essential family activity. Highly recommended.
