I've been trying to breed and raise crickets to save money to feed my frog menagerie. The baby crickets continued to die and I looked at some of them under the microscope, all with small white mites attached to their joints and feeding on them. I examined the substrate and found these mites in the feed and substrate. I set up a new container, bought new crickets and added fresh food only to have it all happen again. I examined a sealed food jar that still contained dates and found that it was infested with these mites. I ran some tests to see what kills these mites without contaminating the food. They were hard to kill, but microwaved food at high power for 50 seconds did the trick. I would then buy new food, put it in the microwave and then freeze it just in case. After that I had no more problems with mites in the feed or substrate.
