Review on Enhance Performance with Pertronix D186504 Flame-Thrower VW Type 1 Engine Plug and Play Distributor – Ignitor Technology & Vacuum Advance by William Stewart

Manufacturing quality issues. Don't assume new devices have been tested. Replace one component at a time.

I replaced my carburetor with an EMPI 34 PICT-3 and replaced my 009 distributor with this one from Pertronix. After that, the engine sneezed, wobbled and accelerated weakly in the lower speed range - all signs of a very lean mixture. After a week of trying to tune and start the engine with starter spray, I found that my new Pertronix manifold allowed air to be drawn into the carburetor through the vacuum tube, creating a lean mixture. When I reinstalled the old 009 distributor, the problem was solved. I'm very frustrated that I spent a whole week inhaling exhaust fumes trying to solve a problem that shouldn't have happened in the first place. Pertronix (and resellers), if you are reading this, put more effort into quality control. Another sign of poor manufacture: the small oval brass port cover on the side of the manifold was not flush with the face of the manifold; protrude about 1 mm.
