ethernet not working dell xps15

i have already used an adapter for ethernet to usb c, when i connected ethernet to this adapter it didn't work, i thought it was on my other usb - and hdmi cables, but it didn't even work with only ethernet plugged into the adapter. Big disappointment, now I have to return it and wait for a better one that actually works. The materials are nice to hold, but the ethernet doesn't work, so I don't know how good it can be without full functionality. Standard USB and HDMI work as described.
