I originally bought this hub to make it easier to use multiple USB devices with my laptop when using it on my desktop. At home. If you plan to use primarily powered USB devices like printers, external hard drives, or DVD drives, you should be fine with an unpowered hub. AC power may be required for reliable operation when used as a keyboard, mouse, barcode reader, and flash drive. And if you're worried about taxing your laptop's USB bus too much, connect it via a docking station (like I did) or use an AC adapter. Still, many people should be able to use it seamlessly without adding another bulky "leech" to their power strips. Finally, the manual says that using USB 1 and 2 devices at the same time can cause the hub to go into USB 1-only mode. I emphasize "can" because I've done tests with older devices in USB 2.0 CD burners worked fine at USB 2 speeds - I suspect compatibility will then depend a lot on the actual devices being used.
