Before I get into that, I want to mention that I scan documents regularly and my choice for home/home office is the ScanSnap iX500 - a more powerful one completely different category. If you don't need portability and can justify the cost (ScanSnaps are currently over $600: oops) then by all means go for the ScanSnap as it's the best document scanner I've used in the last decade . , as a further disclaimer, my first one arrived brand new in the box with a Wi-Fi DOA antenna. I spent over a few minutes troubleshooting/diagnosing and while the RMA process was painless I ended up getting vacuumed a DOA product. That being said, the Brother ADS-1250w is a very portable document scanner that sacrifices as little as possible in terms of quality and reliability. If your use case is scanning a page or two at a time on the go or in a coffee shop and you're not looking for ultra high quality, then yes, as most other reviews have stated, this scanner is for you. However, if you're scanning contracts, manuscripts, or anything over a few pages -- OR -- if you have non-trivial quality or performance requirements, I'd suggest gritting your teeth, sacrificing some portability, and looking for larger, less portable scanners. Trying to wirelessly scan large documents on this device wastes a lot of time and effort: - A "direct" Wi-Fi connection is unreliable and there is often a few seconds delay between pressing "Scan" . in the app and start scanning. - Because of this, the chances of the job dying and taking the scanner with it are pretty high: I just scanned a dozen pages and two of my pages just died, so the whole scanner has to be restarted (neither the "stop" button, nor opening the lid worked to reset the car: womp-womp). - Due to its ultra-portable form factor, there is a high chance that documents will be wrinkled/bent as they pass through the scanner (rescanning required) and you'll end up scanning the same page multiple times. - Brother's proprietary phone app, which is required for scanning to phone, is poor on both Android and iOS (which is impressive as most apps don't work well on one platform or the other, not both) and you'll struggle with that on any platform: whoever designed the application workflow is clearly unfamiliar with UI patterns on mobile devices. tl; dr The ultra-portable form factor is impressive, but this scanner just isn't a.) reliable or b.) a very good scanner. It's hard to recommend this to anyone, especially those who need pro-level performance on the go.
