My new log splitter came with a fill plug/dipstick, needed a wrench to check the fluid level. Worse, the vent was just a drilled hole in a plug. A lack of filtration means that as the fluid cools, dirt and moisture enter the hydraulic tank. This large vented lid could be used as is. It has the same thread as the original plug. The only problem is that there is no dipstick on hand. My solution was to weld the old plug/dipstick onto the new breather cap. This provides filtered ventilation and the fluid level can now be checked without tools.
