I've tried all kinds of cable needles - both a small metal needle with a bend and the one that looks like a shepherd's crook and DPNS and these. I love it. They're shorter than DPNs so they don't get in the way when hanging before or after work, and they're a little thicker at the ends to keep the yarn in place, but not so thick that you can knit off the cable needle yourself whenever you want want. I tend to pull stitches back onto the main needle when knitting and knit directly off the secondary needle (I knit continental). My second choice after that are plastic shepherd hooks from Klee - I bought these because the wait was longer than I expected but now that I have these, all other types were removed.
