I bought various sizes of CMT plunge chisels for my slotting machine. The bits are finely machined and quite rough on the outside. I spend about 30 minutes per bit polishing the bit, but some of the machine marks were so deep I couldn't remove them. After polishing I also sharpened the chisel. The drill bit also had a lot of machine marks and I spent 15 minutes with each drill bit to remove the marks and trim off the cutting edges which are sticking out slightly from the edges of the drill bit and leaving light drill marks in the slot. After this initial setup, the drills will work. Well. Bits hold sharp edges well and eject chips well without overheating. I wish CMT could decide whether they build long or short shafted snails. Chisels 1/4" and some sizes larger have a long shank, but larger sizes like 3/4" and 1" have a short shank. This is not very practical if you need to resize frequently, as is the case with I needed to remove the chuck from the Mortiser bit to install the spacer for the short shank bits and remove it for the short shank bits Would I buy them again I would buy the Powermatic and Lee Check out Valley bits before I make my decision The pictures below show the bit before and after polishing.
