This is a quick way to mark the center of anything that fits between two pins. Its accuracy is below measurement and above guesswork. And yes, it's plastic. Like all my rulers. never mind It's not glass. I know the quality police yell in their reviews that it's not metal, but it would be a lot heavier and more expensive if it were. So just take it for what it is: a $6 tool that fits in your pocket and does its job well. As for getting the pencil firmly in place, yes, it's hard to hit. But just keep the tip. So far I haven't had any trouble sliding the pencil into position. I'd be more annoyed if it fell out with every use because it's too loose. I'm happy with that.
