Review on Simrad NSS9 Sonar Insight Charts by Gary Haymon

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I like this device, it's SIMRAD. I have a problem with

I recently purchased a new 2020 NauticStar 2302 Center Console which I am very happy with. I've spent most of my career in maritime law enforcement, so I use electronics quite heavily when it comes to my personal boats. My marine electronics dealer did an excellent job equipping my new boat with a SIMRAD GO9 XSE multifunction display, a SIMRAD NSS9 EVO3 multifunction display, a SIMRAD Halo 20 radar, a thru-hull transducer (for GO9) and a 3-in-1 Equipped rear mount. Converter (for NSS9) and GS25 GPS antenna with compass. After almost 50 years of boating, I have learned to appreciate all the reserves I can afford. I paid for extended warranties on everything. Since I'm on the water 300-400 hours a year, extended warranties come in handy for me. When I picked up the boat my SIMRAD dealer gave me a $300 SIMRAD rebate which I duly submitted along with a SIMRAD dealer invoice of almost $10,000. During the online application process they asked for a photo of the back of the unit with a serial number so I sent them a picture of my console and explained that everything was flush mounted but the serial numbers for each component were clearly listed on the invoice. That was in January 2020. They gave me a tracking number the same day but I haven't heard from them since. Today April 30, 2020 I contacted their rebate office which was VERY difficult for me as the address they provided with my tracking number (/go/Rebate/Dashboard) is not working. Doesn't really do anything. The phone number they suggested will take you through a series of menus that will eventually ask for the tracking number or my phone number on file. None of the menus worked, giving the phone number (which I've had for 30 years) didn't work and it cut me off halfway through the tracking number every time. Finally, I contacted the person through another phone number I found on the internet (800-286-9146). The woman I spoke to said that my application was denied two days after I submitted it because I didn't submit a photo of the back of the device. She couldn't explain why they hadn't told me this by phone, email or post. I asked why SIMRAD agreed to accept serial numbers from my authorized dealer to sell me the extended warranties they had on file. but expects me to remove the device to access the serial number instead of accepting the serial number on the bill. She didn't have an answer to that question so I asked for contact information to make a formal complaint. After keeping me waiting for a while, she came back and said her boss was at lunch but would call me back. he never did. In addition, GO9 failed almost immediately (within a month). The touchpad is completely dead. The retailer reported this and was told they would send a "replacement" within a few weeks. He threw a tantrum and demanded that they send a new one immediately and he paid for expedited shipping. He took care of me there and everything works great. Over the years I've had Raytheon electronics (maybe it's Ray Marine now), Furuno, Si-Tex, ACR, ICom etc which I've been very happy with. I don't understand at all. Why would SIMRAD offer me a $300 rebate AFTER I installed all this hardware if they were scamming me? I am old and my experience is outdated. The boat I replaced was a 1990 Scarab so I don't know about new marine electronics suppliers like Hummingbird or Garmin b. in my time LORAN was the most important thing. I know I could outfit this new boat with Furuno gear for the same money I paid for it. Honestly, I have to say that apart from the initial GO9 bug, everything now works beautifully and everything talks to each other perfectly. This is nonsense that annoys me. I would post all relevant documents and photos but there doesn't seem to be any strings attached to that. Bill E Branscum
