Review on Tool Company 31099 Straight Diameter by William Mahajan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A very useful tool, true to the size of my vertical mill

I am happy with this purchase and will definitely use this supplier for tools in the future. Four gaskets are included as shown in the picture. As you'd expect, they come in standard thicknesses of .500", .250", and .125" (x2). This mandrel should accept a wide range of side cutters, rip saws, etc. It fills the gap I've had in my tool collection for a long time and greatly expands the types of cutters I can use. IMO this is a great arbor for the price. You can pay A LOT more for a prettier but probably not much more functional arbor. This arbor is largely true to the picture and description: - The surface of the shaft body, nut and seals is evenly finely matted (shot peened?) with slightly visible tarnish marks as can be seen in the picture - The shaft is generally shiny with slight discolouration, Slightly opaque near the mandrel body 3/4 x 1 HSS lettering and F&D logo laser etched on side of mandrel. The roughness of the spacers appears to have been hand ground to a thickness of 0.001 inch. The opinions seem correct enough for anything I'm likely to do. The external threads are slightly broken on the inner end and there were a few small chips. This does not affect operation. The parts arrived with no traces of rust, with a small amount of oil on the internal surfaces. The 3/4" straight shank is the largest diameter my old Millrite MV will accept when using standard collets. This shaft is a real test of stiffness, runout etc when it counts. It's great for the price I paid to get a useful tool from the US.
