UPDATE - with instructions

I already have a Yale Assure SL Smart Lock installed that works with Siri/Apple HomeKit. I also have all my smart devices that can work with Google Home, so I decided to do the same with the door lock. When you open the box, a note will ask you to install the Yale Access app first. There is a sign on the box that contains the module that asks you to install the August app. Confusing? Yes! Especially when you realize that running each app is basically the same, but with two different accounts. Installing the devices was easy. I'm quite a practical person, have built my own computers and completely furnished my home myself with smart sockets, switches and a robot vacuum cleaner, but after a busy day of factory setting the Yale lock at least 8 times , I was only able to install the Yale app/ August (they are actually twins) to remotely control the lock. Neither Google Home nor Apple Home could see it. Now I've lost the ability to use Siri to control the lock - even after removing the August module and reinserting the original Yale Lock HomeKit module. So you don't fall down the rabbit hole of frustration I did. , here are some really helpful tips: 1. If you have given guests or family members their personal access codes in the past, write them down.2. Install ONLY the August app on your smartphone. DO NOT install the Yale app! 3. Be sure to remove at least one battery BEFORE inserting the August.4 module. If you plan to use this on an Apple Home, be sure to write down the 8-digit HomeKit number found on the August unit before inserting it into the Yale.5 lock. Use the application to register August module with lock and application.6. If you want to use Apple Home Lock, skip setting up Apple HomeKit first. You can always add it later.7. The Bridge unit works best when plugged into an outlet within 8 feet and oriented perpendicular to the door. If the Bluetooth test fails, try a different plug or use an extension cord to make sure it's close enough for the lock to work.8. Feel free to contact Yale Support. They are VERY helpful and persistent and will help you make the lock work for you. You can confirm your block's signal and actions, as well as reset it on the side of an account that you don't have access to. Their music on hold is annoying, but PRESS option 1 to leave a voice message (although you can't actually leave a message) and they'll call you back on the number you called them from when they're available. The lock now works with Apple HomeKit and I can tell Siri to lock or unlock the door even when I'm not at home. The app keeps track of what code was used and when, so I can keep track of guests coming and going. The Google Home app is a little less intelligent. While it can unlock the door, you have an extra step: you have to enter a master code to do this, and once it's unlocked or locked, the status of the device and the presence of the Google Home icon never change. Google will tell you the door is unlocked but the status in the Google Home app remains locked. Apple HomeKit is winning this battle.

Pros
  • Lock, unlock and check lock status with voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri. Alexa can also notify you when your battery is low. Set up smart reorders via Dash Replenishment to have spare batteries when you need them
Cons
  • So far so good
