I have a pet door in the sliding glass door area so I cannot use the locks that came with the sliding glass door. I started looking for mechanisms to lock the door while the pet door was in place. There are locks that sit on the floor. I figured if I were going to do this, I could just take a dowel, cut it, and stick it in the groove. Then I found this one. During the day it folds up and at night it lowers and slides into the groove for overnight fixation. One of the problems with installing the dowel in the groove is that it would be easy to just pull the door out of the track and you're inside. In this case, adjust it to your height so that you are comfortable. With a crossbar in the middle of the glass, it's a lot harder to pull the door off the rails to get in. It's much more reliable. Also, it looks like it belongs there instead of a dowel.
