annoy; very dirty, strong smell straight out of the bag, aquarium not cleaned

I have had aquariums for over 40 years so I have a lot of experience with them. About a year ago we moved into a new house and installed a 75 gallon freshwater aquarium. There are canister filters that add an additional 10 gallons. In any case, the water source appeared to be algae, and about a year after installation we had a terrible outbreak. Even after using algae killers and multiple water changes, tank cleanings etc the algae smell was still there so I bought this product to add to one of the canisters to help with further filtration and odor removal. This product stinks! To the right of the bag there was a smell of sewage. And it was dirty. I used buckets and a hose to rinse, rinse, and rinse it before use. After a week we still smell algae, although the pool is relatively clean. The product doesn't seem to work at all. I go back to my local fish shop and pay for the more expensive charcoal. Lesson learned; High volume isn't always a good deal.
