This Garmin GPS worked great during my Arizona hike through the Grand Canyon and other areas of Arizona. I also used it while exploring the Arizona desert mountains side-by-side on a Polaris RZR. It actually showed various main off-road tracks, I was surprised! Arizona topographic map is preloaded. The map had all the Arizona routes I needed. Before leaving the launch path I would mark it as a waypoint after deleting the previous waypoint. Make sure you clear your previous tracks from the previous hike before starting a new route. He traced my route so I could find my way back to the car. Battery life with alkaline batteries was around 14-16 hours, I left them on the whole time to test before the trip. I only set GPS satellite mode to maximize battery life. Screen brightness was at 50%. Make sure you have selected the type of battery you are using in the system settings. Then I tried Energizer lithium batteries and they lasted even longer :). The interface is fairly basic after a few days of use at my home. I watched a few videos to make sure I know how to use it properly. I'm not sure why people are giving bad reviews about this device. The buttons are nice compared to the touchscreen. The screen is very easy to read in direct sunlight at medium brightness. Be sure to bring a traditional compass and a survey map. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the area you will be exploring
