Review on Maximize Performance with Volant 3285661 Cold Air Intake Combo Kit & Powercore Filter by Andargie Waiker

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Volant's CAI + bucket combo does two things very well, but at a high cost and difficult to install

I had a 2002 Silverado and a 2003 Tahoe Z71. Both showed quite annoying heat build up when it gets hot, whether it's an aging intake baffle and box or whatever, the bottom line is 90-100+ days after I've been in traffic or after the car has been driven, while I'm in the workshop. (I have a pug and she needs A/C all the time) The truck runs pretty poorly - power reduces/shakes when accelerating and there is a droning sound like the engine is inhaling a large amount of air to keep the heat in the to overcome engine. Bay entering the intake and MAF. I tried a Specter chrome whistle with a K&N oiled red filter. It has an open metal box, and the heatsink issue was as bad, if not worse, than the OEM. It sounded good and added a bit of torque to the stock setup (with the exception of the Flowmaster). There is no melody. I tried the same combo on my Silverado and Tahoe and was annoyed that both cars absorb heat. The valance setup looked perfect unless I was traversing a few creeks. It draws air through the fender as well as the entrance for the towing eye through a long air intake. Cautious. In fact, it attaches to the tow hook bolt. Some of the issues I had with the installation were related to: * The bucket installation instructions are vague. * It is difficult to put the bucket back in place when it is already attached to the crate. * Getting the MAF, gasket and adapter ring in the box, all lined up and bolted together is a real dirty word. I used duct tape to hold the entire MAF in place with the gasket while I lined up the gasket and ring in the box and held them between my knees. * The smaller hose segment must be used on the line from the MAF to the inlet. because the larger one is too long, which contradicts the instructions. I connected the longer filter to the box and bucket because it doesn't reach backwards.* There are two ways air enters the filter: through the bucket and the side vents in the wing. There's no padding to prevent air from escaping between the box and fender, which seems like an odd omission for a kit of this price and complexity. My general concerns about the kit are: ) The composite/fiber filter will last, but its construction is different from what I've used in every other CAI. The price of this rig is about double that of a similar non-blade rig. and a fancy blue filter. * The clear acrylic airbox window will eventually scratch and/or fog up from heat and exposure. What's Good in the Kit: * After a day's riding, the Tahoe definitely showed a slight improvement in torque and horsepower. Shifts feel smoother, and in warm weather where I used to feel a slight drop in power (when climbing a steep hill, for example), acceleration feels "realer" and smoother. You don't get more than 20 hp like some videos claim, but it's a noticeable small improvement. . Not a fancy chrome pipe, but the clear window airbox is cool. *So far this seems to have solved the idle heater issue, but I won't be able to tell until we have a really hot day. I would recommend running some edge foam or some sort of insulation or tubing along the edge of the square hole next to the fender vents to minimize heat escaping from the engine bay.

Pros
  • Powercore direct airflow reduces pressure loss
Cons
  • Slightly torn
