Install catastrophe in hardware

So my previous doorknob cracked a few times and broke, I swapped the door handle and so this time I decided to go to the entrance with the key, have never worked with it and I was so excited to see the instructions until I saw the instruction document and the installation was very difficult. My question is what happens if you cut off too much of the latch on the outside handle key because the inside latch mechanism sticks out too far. Why can't I cut this piece off? What should I do now ? I'm not sure because the instructions don't say a phone number or directory dialing. Nothing!
