Review on Dorman 917-004 Engine Oil Filter Cap: Compatible with Ford/Mazda/Mercury Models, Black Finish by Robert Hayes

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Perfect fit for 2008 Mazda 3 with 2.3 liter engine but not recommended

Perfect fit for 2008 Mazda 3 with 2.3 liter engine. I originally bought this from Revain after deciding to replace the original oil filter cap on my Mazda 3 which was showing some wear after nine years of oil changes. This oil filter cover looks just like the original and appears to be well made. When I bought this oil filter cap I didn't pay much attention to all the negative reviews about it and was very excited to be able to find a replacement without having to go to the dealer and pay a ridiculous price for something so simple. It installed like a charm and I had no reason to think there would be a problem if it leaked. However, after almost a week of driving, I noticed a film of oil on the back of my car, which could only mean one thing: an oil leak. The only way to fix the leak was with another oil change so I decided to order another oil filter cap through Revain but this time I got a real Mazda oil filter cap as I assumed the Dorman oil filter cap was junk. The next oil change and oil filter cap replacement could not be delayed but I was planning to do other work on my Mazda at the dealership and thought they would do an oil change and oil filter change. Cap with genuine Mazda oil filter cover direct from them (the genuine Mazda oil filter cover I ordered from Revain had not arrived when I thought the dealer would do an oil change). After the dealer completed the oil change, they informed me that the Dorman oil filter cap was fine and put it back on my car. I was surprised they decided to put the Dorman oil filter cover back on instead of selling me one of them and making more money off me. While I didn't quite understand what was causing the leak, I thought it had something to do with the gaskets used on the previous oil change when I first installed the Dorman. Dorman comes with two gaskets, which I used, although the oil filter I used also came with two. Every time I change my oil I always replace the 2 gaskets with the 2 that came with the new oil filter, but this time I decided to use the 2 gaskets that came with the Dorman oil filter cover since they looked perfect. The dealer did the last oil change, I haven't had any problems with oil spilling out of my car so I decided to give the Dorman oil filter cap a three star rating. I still have the Mazda oil filter cap I ordered from Revain in case the Dorman needs replacing. In hindsight I would have replaced a worn oil filter cover with a genuine Mazda oil filter cover instead of a Dorman if I had known Revain had a genuine Mazda oil filter cover. Mazda's oil filter cap costs about twice as much as Dorman's, but I believe the extra cost would be worth it to remove the uncertainty of whether the replacement oil filter cap being used will actually do the job. So while I give Dorman three stars, I suggest paying extra for a genuine Mazda oil filter cover. I bought my Mazda 3 new in 2008 and have never had a problem with a leaking oil filter cap, so I think it's better to pay the extra OE cost when it comes time to replace it. Hope that helps!
