I bought this on a whim for my baby bearded dragon thinking he was still cold in his habitat. I tested it before putting it in because some of the reviews said it was too hot. It gets very, very warm, almost to the point of being hot to the touch. I think this will work fine with a piece of log on top, I did this to prevent my dragon from lying directly on the rock which would cause burns. It just climbs the trunk and stays warm. I think that just a bare stone can harm a small lizard, so I do not recommend using it without a coating.
